A rice cooker / steamer is wonderful for those that eat a lot of rice! Cooking rice the traditional way in a pot is much more exacting, and you need to spend a lot of time stirring so that you don"t burn the pot. A rice cooker is sooo much more easier. You literally put in the rice and water, and then you just leave it and forget it - the pot will cook up perfect rice each time! You can make different types of rice in a rice cooker - whether it be white, rice, or other varieties. You can also steam vegetables and other things as well. A rice cooker is versatile for many things.
In this particular video, I will show you how to use a rice cooker for making brown rice. You can also check your rice cooker"s directions for more specific instructions.
UPDATE:
Since several people have asked - the rice cooker I have is an Aroma model ARC-1010SB
UPDATE:
Many people seem to be confused by the water/rice proportions. It"s NOT a true ratio. Whatever the amount of rice you are putting in, you want to put in the SAME amount of water, plus 1/2 cup.
1 cup of rice = 1-1/2 cup of water
2 cups of rice = 2-1/2 cups of water
3 cups of rice = 3-1/2 cups of water
4 cups of rice = 4-1/2 cups of water
and so forth
These are the instructions straight from the book for my rice cooker.
UPDATE: No, I do not wash the rice. You certainly can if you want to remove the extra starch, but I do not. It"s just my preference.
